What is an Emergency?
Our Home Emergency policies are meant to be there in the event of an emergency.
So what is an Emergency?
A sudden and unexpected event which, if not dealt with quickly would in the reasonable opinion of the helpline:
a) render the home unsafe or insecure; or
b) damage or cause further damage to the home; or
c) cause personal risk to you; or
d) cause a health and safety risk to others.
We always try and be as transparent as possible about our pricing and our policies. We want to be as honest as we can be, so that you understand what you are buying. They are extremely good value for money, but they don't cover every situation. Below we have tried to give examples and the reason when you would and also would not be able to claim.
Our Home Emergency policies are there in the event of an emergency. They will not cover general maintenance, this is still down to you. So please take a look at our examples below and hopefully they will give you clear examples, but also the rationale as to how they determine what is a claim.
Burst Pipes or Sudden Leakage
Repairs of leaks and blockages within your plumbing and drainage system and clearing blocked drains
Failure of Electrical Supply
Emergency caused by, or breakdown of the domestic electrical wiring supply system and its components
Damage to Locks & Windows
Replacing lost keys, repairing insecure locks and protecting your home following damage to your windows
Infestation of Pests
Protecting your home against infestation of the home by rats, mice and wasps nests or hornets nests
So What's Covered?
- Internal Drainage -
a) Blocked toilet / waste pipe.
b) Leaking pipe / toilet / soil vent / stopcock
c) Leaking cold water tank / hot water cylinder (and • subsequent draining down if required in an emergency).
d) Complete drain blockage that results in all sinks being blocked.
- External Drainage - Blocked external drain.
- Emergency Boiler Cover
- In the event of a complete breakdown of the domestic boiler at your home which results in the complete loss of your heating/or hot water an engineer will visit your home and complete a temporary repair to limit or prevent damage or, solely at the claims administrator’s discretion, replace the relevant part(s).
- Electrical Emergency - In the event of an emergency arising from the sudden and unexpected breakdown or failure of the permanent domestic electrical wiring system and its components (fuse box, switches, sockets) supplying electrical power to your home, an engineer will visit your home and complete a temporary repair to limit or prevent damage or, solely at the claims administrator’s discretion, replace the relevant part(s) and/or wiring.
- Gas Supply
- After the National Gas Emergency Service has visited your home and isolated your gas supply, emergency repairs will be carried out by a Gas Safe contractor, who will repair or replace the damaged section of internal gas
supply pipe. Our contractor will also turn your gas supply back on. - Water Supply
- Emergency repairs following a water supply system failure to:
a) The kitchen; or
b) The bathroom where no other water supply is available for bathing. - Security
- If a security incident happens at your home, we will make sure your home is secure. For example, if your home is broken into, we will board up broken glazing and/or repair or replace broken locks for external windows and doors.
- Lost Keys
- If the keys to the main house at your home are lost or stolen and there is no other set available to gain access, we will assist you to gain access to your home for example by replacing the locks and keys.
- Gas Supply Pipe - After the National Gas Emergency Service has visited your home and isolated your gas supply, In the event of a leak on your internal gas supply pipe, an engineer will visit your home and repair or replace the damaged section of the pipe.
- Roofing - If a roofing incident happens at your home, we will protect your home from further damage. For example, if roofing tiles are blown off during bad weather, we will use a tarpaulin to prevent further damage occurring.
- Pests
- Emergency repairs following an infestation as a result of the following pest in and/or attached to the home and there is clear evidence of the infestation.
a) Wasp nests.
b) Hornet nests.
c) House mice.
d) Field mice.
e) Black or Brown Rats.
These are headline covers under the policy. There are some exclusions to some sections. Please read the
policy wording carefully to ensure you fully understand what is covered.
What's Not Covered Examples
For some additional clarity, this policy is a Home Emergency policy. So it's main purpose is to rectify issues that have occurred unexpectedly and which could be detrimental to the property if left. So there are some issues that would not be covered as they are considered to be general maintenance issues and not of an urgent nature.
Taking out a Home Emergency policy does not mean that you should not continue to maintain your property as would be normally expected.
Some examples of this would be
- General maintenance including, but not limited, to dripping taps
- Frozen pipes which have not caused any damage
- Leaks from household appliances, such as sink, shower or bath where leakage only occurs when the appliance is in use
- Repair to lock which is secure when there is another means of access
- Inoperable toilet, if you have more than one toilet in the home
- A blocked sink
- Pipes outside the boundary of your home
- Faulty electrical socket in one room
- Pest Infestation to outbuildings, garages etc...
- Storage Heaters and Electric panel heaters as they are not classed as central heating systems
- Boiler Service - This can be arranged by finding a local expert at gas safe register

How Do We Keep the Price so low?
The most effective way we keep our prices down is with low cost advertising. We predominantly rely on 'word of mouth' and utilising Facebook Groups and Twitter. We are constantly promoting ourselves and we hope over time you will promote us too!
Our product has all the features and benefits as shown above. However, we keep the price down by having a clause that states if this is the first time you have bought Home Emergency, then you cannot make a claim in the first 14 days. This is not aimed at avoiding paying claims, but is there to prevent people taking out a policy because something has already gone wrong with their property! The result is that it makes our policy, we believe the most competitive on the market, which means that you benefit year in year out.
This clause only applies in the first year, it does not apply at renewal, or if you are switching to us from another provider. In the interests of transparency we feel it is important to point this out to you clearly.
